Nopeming Fast Facts
- Opened in 1912 as the first sanatorium in Minnesota to treat tuberculosis patient
- Nopeming is Ojibwe and refers to the facility location: “Out in the Woods”
- The facility is approximately 110,000 square feet and is currently located on 40 acres
- In its early years Nopeming was a home for over 200 tuberculosis patients and some of the core staff members
- 1971 - Nopeming became a nursing home
- 2002 - Nopeming closed due to lack of funds
- 2005 - Property is purchased by private investor
- 2009 - Orison Inc. takes ownership of the facility and 40 surrounding acres
- 2016 - Nopeming opens its doors to tourism
