Nopeming Fast Facts

  • Opened in 1912 as the first sanatorium in Minnesota to treat tuberculosis patient
  • Nopeming is Ojibwe and refers to the facility location: “Out in the Woods”
  • The facility is approximately 110,000 square feet and is currently located on 40 acres
  • In its early years Nopeming was a home for over 200 tuberculosis patients and some of the core staff members
  • 1971 - Nopeming became a nursing home
  • 2002 - Nopeming closed due to lack of funds
  • 2005 - Property is purchased by private investor
  • 2009 - Orison Inc. takes ownership of the facility and 40 surrounding acres
  • 2016 - Nopeming opens its doors to tourism
